Frequently Asked Questions

What is a standby generator, and how does it differ from a portable generator? Expand

A standby generator is a permanent fixture that sits outside the home and is connected to the electrical system. It automatically turns on when there is a power outage and is powered by natural gas or propane. A portable generator is designed to be moved around and manually started by the homeowner. It is usually powered by gasoline or diesel fuel. Standby generators are a much safer option when compared to storing gas and running extension cords.

What size standby generator do I need for my home? Expand

The size of the standby generator you need depends on your home’s electrical load, which is determined by the appliances and systems you want to power during an outage. We can help you calculate your home’s electrical load and recommend an appropriately sized generator.

What type of fuel does a standby generator use? Expand

Standby generators can be powered by natural gas, propane, or diesel fuel. The type of fuel you choose depends on availability in your area, your preferences, and your budget. Diesel generators are typical only used in commercial and industrial applications.

How long will a standby generator run on a single tank of fuel? Expand

The length of time a standby generator can run on a single tank of fuel depends on the generator’s size, fuel type, and load. A smaller generator may run for a few hours on a single tank, while a larger generator with a lower load could run for days.

Can a standby generator power my whole house? Expand

Yes, a properly sized standby generator can power your whole house during a power outage. However, it’s important to remember that some high-power appliances, such as air conditioners and electric water heaters, may require a larger generator to operate.

How do I choose a reputable dealer/installer for my standby generator? Expand

Choose a reputable dealer/installer by researching and comparing the services and pricing of several companies. Look for reviews and testimonials from previous customers and verify the company’s licenses and certifications. A reputable company should be able to build you a turn key program.

How often should I have my standby generator serviced? Expand

Standby generators should be serviced annually by a qualified technician to ensure they are in good working condition and to address any potential issues before they become major problems.

How noisy are standby generators, and can I do anything to reduce the noise level? Expand

Standby generators produce noise when in operation, but the level of noise varies depending on the model and manufacturer. Some standby generators are designed to operate quietly and can be placed farther away from the house to reduce noise levels.

How does a standby generator turn on automatically during a power outage? Expand Standby generators are equipped with an automatic transfer switch that monitors the power supply to your home. When the power goes out, the transfer switch detects the loss of power and signals the generator to turn on automatically.

Serving the Greater Houston Area

Generator Industries is owned and operated by natives of the Greater Houston Area. Highly skilled, trained and certified technicians handle all installations, service and maintenance. We recently moved our warehouse and office space located off the Beltway and HWY 35. Our new location is a bit farther north just a few miles from our previous location. Our staff are highly qualified and experienced in customer service. Continuing education and training of personnel is highly stressed. In addition, our 14,000+ sq ft facility located in Houston is equipped with inventory of generators and related parts and supplies to meet our customers’ needs in a timely manner. Due to unprecedented demand, our inventory of generators is delayed. We are installing generators nearly “truck to trailer” as best we can. We will discuss anticipated installation delays during your site assessment process- virtually or in person.
