Most of what determines whether a standby generator works in year six happens before anyone lifts the set off the truck: the load calculation, the gas sizing, the permit, the utility coordination. The physical install is the short part.

Timeline
Start to finish, honestly.
From permit approval to final startup, most residential installs are one to four days on site. The whole job, from your first call, usually runs like this.
02 · ~1–3 weeks
Permitting and utility coordination
Pulled in our name, not yours. The range is wide because it depends on the jurisdiction, and a natural gas meter upgrade, where one is needed, depends on the provider’s availability rather than on us.
03 · 1–4 days
Onsite installation
Set on a concrete pad, or a galvanized stand where it needs to sit above 24 inches. Transfer switch, gas and electrical, all by our own TECL-licensed crew.
04 · Shortly after
Inspection and commissioning
Final inspection, then started and tested under load with the transfer arrangement exercised, so the handover is proven rather than assumed.
The honest headline: the permit stage is the variable. Everything else runs to a predictable schedule. Anyone quoting you a fixed total without knowing your jurisdiction is guessing.
Cost
$8,000 to $20,000 installed, air-cooled.
Where you land inside that depends on the size of the machine, the gas work and the condition of your panel. We quote after the load calculation, not before. A number given over the phone before anyone has looked at your service entrance is a number that changes later.

Why the prep matters more
An undersized set will run fine on a mild evening and drop the load the first time the air conditioning and the well pump start together.
A gas line sized for the appliances and not for the generator will start the machine and then starve it.
Neither shows up on the day. Both show up in the storm. That is why the calculation comes first.

The install is the start, not the end.
A standby set sits idle for months and is then asked to carry a house for days. Twice-yearly servicing is what keeps that promise honest in a climate this hot, humid, dusty and, for a few weeks a year, genuinely cold.
